Linguistics Applied to Down Syndrome Cases for Teaching-Learning of First and Foreign Languages

Our contribution consists of an initial proposal for teaching the mother tongue and foreign languages to children with Down Syndrome with the goal of stimulating language development using a family-focused methodology adapted by Global Kids. The family, as well as the child, benefits from the experience of motivation and success, which lowers the stress and frustration levels for everyone.

Without a doubt, learning and teaching second languages has become fundamental for our children today, because these make it possible for them to be part of and influence a globalized world. Children with Down Syndrome and other alternative abilities are not exempt from this phenomenon, so that, we must give our best efforts to transforming our society into one that is inclusive of these differences.

What we expect to achieve in the short term by teaching the mother and foreign languages is to stimulate the language area of the brain so as to contribute the development of speech ability.

In the medium term, we expect to prepare children in the academic area of foreign languages and arts in order to diminish the gaps that exist between the education that children with normal development receive and that received by children with special educational needs, and, in the long term we hope to place these young people into the active workforce with valuable tools, such as a foreign language.
